PONTONS (ALT PENEDES REGION) ROMANTIC WEEKEND
Pontons is the highest town in the Alt Penedès region, at 632 mts heigth. Its sharp orography with steep rocks and cliffs, breaks with the picture of flat fields with vinetrees typical of the Penedès region and brings you closer to the image of a mountain spot. Pontons is placed at the nortwestern limit of the Alt Penedès region and it is adjoining to the town limits of la Llacuna, Querol, Aiguamúrcia, Montmell and Torrelles de Foix. The Les Solanes Mount (914 m), the Mas Fonoll (794 m) and the rocks of el Pany (712 m) are among the highest peaks in the region. Most of the town limit is still forest. The economy of the village is based in agricultural activity and second residence tourism.
In a medieval document from 996, there is a reference that certifies the structuration of the town limit at the end of the Xth century. In 1271, the Pontons Castle went to Prince Pere’s hands, Jaume the Ist son, who sold it to the Santes Creus Monastery.
You will be able to enjoy its old town with its narrow and steep streets, the houses built on the Pontons river banks and the Virgin of Merçè Chapel, neo modernist temple built in 1945.
Leaving the village centre you can find the Santa Magdalena Church at about 1 kilometre far, from which you can admire a beautiful view of the place. The romanesque chapel of Sant Joan de la Muntanya (Saint John of the Mountain), spectacularly suspending on top of the Fonoll Mount. From all the Masies (local farming houses) of the area, the fortified manor Mas de Pontons (XVIIth-XVIIIth century) stands out, located at about 3 km from Santa Magdalena church.
At about 15 minutes from Pontons some touristic points of considerable interest can be found such as the Santes Creus Monastery, the viewpoint and sanctuary of Santa Maria de Foix (Saint Mary of Foix, patroness of the region), Sant Martí Sarroca Castle and the romanesque church of Santa Maria that is part of the same castle.
